a new sport?

The other day I saw a group of men skiing down the road. That's right, I said they were skiing down the road. Okay, the things on their feet weren't actually skis, being considerably shorter and with little wheels attached. But they were definitely skiing, moving in the same way that skiers do. They were even using those stick things that skiers use (must be a proper word for them, but I'm sure I don't know it). So is this kind of thing common in Iceland/Scandinavian countries? Or is this some exciting new sport that I'm the last one to catch on to (as usual)?
